You are a Cosmic.
The solar system you call home is mostly filled with aether, a mysterious substance that provides breathable air, efficiently transfers heat, and allows for faster-than-normal space travel. Chiefly, though, aether allows (and even fosters) the transmission of the cosmic energies created by celestial objects. This “aether,” as it is called, fills much of the solar system.
The great amount of time you have spent flitting about Aetherspace has made you sensitive to these energies. You can draw upon them, infuse your body with them, and channel them into fantastic effects.
In Cosmic Corsairs, you portray a Cosmic, a being imbued with power by the universe itself. But your life is not all starships and sunshine.
The planets of Aetherspace are many and varied. Decades ago, powerful factions from three worlds formed a coalition intent upon influencing and bettering life in the system. As too often occurs, those in power changed and their ideals shifted. What started as the Coalition has now been usurped by the Triarchy, an organization ruled by factions from three worlds, whose members care more about power and wealth than prosperity and equality.
Now most of the system lives under the Triarchy’s thumb, which controls almost everything that takes place on many of the planets in the system.
But on the moons, on space stations, in the far reaches, on the fringe, unrest grows. Bands of independent starship freighters, explorers, emissaries, freedom fighters, and more come together to form a Resistance. Those with the means and fortitude who live on the more tightly controlled planets coordinate with these rebels. And both groups seek allies from all across Aetherspace.
Being a “space pirate” in Cosmic Corsairs isn’t about getting rich or having the best starship, though both will certainly help. The real goal is to loosen the Triarchy’s grasp, help those in need, fight for freedom, and nurture the Resistance through its infancy, supplying it with much-needed leaders and heroes.
In time, the Triarchy may be defeated. But for now, the fight rages on. And you, as a Cosmic, possess the ability to help redirect the celestial winds and usher the people of Aetherspace into a new and better age.
