BREATHLESS: FRIGHTMARE EDITION launches April 7
The viral zombie survival RPG returns in a definitive STORYPAK format
One of itch.io’s most-hacked tabletop RPGs is getting its definitive release. Breathless: Frightmare Edition launches April 7 on Kickstarter, becoming the first game beyond CBR+PNK to join the award-winning STORYPAK line.
Originally designed by René-Pier Deshaies in 2022 as a minimalist two-page RPG, Breathless quickly became an indie phenomenon, celebrated for its tension-driven mechanics, scarcity-based gameplay, and focus on survival. Its lightweight system has inspired more than 350 original hacks and adaptations across seven languages, including acclaimed titles such as Stoneburner and Midnight Muscadines.
FRIGHTMARE EDITION
Breathless: Frightmare Edition expands the original pamphlet version with revised rules, new artwork by vil (Mothership: Dying Hard on Hardlight Station), and layout design by DNGN CLUB (HOW’S MY DRIVING?). The release also introduces a campaign mode supporting 8–12 sessions, featuring scenarios written by Allen Hall.
All content is packaged within 15 pamphlets housed in a single STORYPAK, delivering a complete and portable tabletop experience.
THE STORYPAK FORMAT
First developed for CBR+PNK by Emanoel Melo, STORYPAK delivers complete tabletop RPGs in a compact, collectible format designed for fast setup and play. Breathless: Frightmare Edition marks the first expansion of the STORYPAK line beyond its original title.

ABOUT THE GAME
Set in a world consumed by a mysterious infection, Breathless places players in a desperate fight for survival. The disease begins with memory loss—erasing identity and history—before transforming victims into relentless, breath-hungry creatures.
A single bite is enough to trigger the infection, drawing survivors into an endless cycle of pursuit and collapse. Civilization has fallen, and what remains is simple:
Loot. Shoot. Survive.
The FRIGHTMARE EDITION builds on the original one-page RPG with expanded systems and gameplay modes, including Journey, Survival, and Haven play. The boxed STORYPAK format includes:
- 12 double-sided, four-panel pamphlets
- 5 player sheets and 1 GM sheet
- Hazard and haven systems
- 4 unique locations
- A step-down core mechanic emphasizing survival and looting
- Campaign play supporting 6–8 sessions
