Steve Jackson Games Announces Munchkin Second Edition

Munchkin debuted in 2001 and has become a staple at game nights around the world. As the game approaches its 25th anniversary in 2026, Steve Jackson Games is releasing a new edition. Fans of the mega-hit game of killing monsters, stealing treasure, and stabbing buddies can make a pledge to secure their copy when Munchkin Second Edition comes to BackerKit in early 2026!

Munchkin Second Edition enhances the original game that players have loved over the past two decades. The box and all the cards feature updated art, illustrated by Munchkin’s original artist, John Kovalic. Setup and gameplay are faster than ever, and a new element is added – Gold Pieces – which will allow players to micro-bribe their friends and make change when selling items. The rules include guidelines for adapting cards from the original edition to work with the new edition. An Upgrade Kit for those who purchased Munchkin Big Box will be available, adding extra cards, a sheet of coins, and reference cards to the Big Box.

As we enter 2026, hereby known as The Year of the Munchkin, we’ll be celebrating 25 amazing years by adding new 150-card expansions for Second Edition, a new edition of The Munchkin Book, roleplaying rules using 9th Level Games’ Polymorph system, a Munchkin card shuffler created by Urza’s Toolbox, and so much more.

The Munchkin Second Edition crowdfunding campaign will include exciting stretch goals, like a free STL file to print a Munchkin dice tower and a free, updated version of the Munchkin Level Counter app. International shipping will be available to Canada, the UK, and select EU countries, and copies will be for sale at Gen Con next summer.
