Are you a fan of weird fantasy in the style of China Miéville? Unworldly sylvan environments? Strange creatures as player characters? Or do you just want a change in pace from traditional fantasy RPGs? The Snarl is for you!
In The Snarl, you fight for survival within an unusual environment of massive kilometer-high trees. You play one of the sapient species that thrive here, from tank-like beetles and thorned lizards to psychic-linked monkey-raptor pairings and carnivorous plants. Civilizations span from the open skies and airships of the Canopy to the misty, twisted paths of the Tangles below and further down to the eerie phosphorescent depths of the Mulch and the Roots. Sap drawn from the trees fuels your abilities, which you need to battle the dual encroaching threats of the Blight and the Creep.
Exotic World-Building
The Snarl is an original setting brought to you by Posthuman Studios, the force behind the acclaimed Eclipse Phase transhuman sci-fi RPG. We've brought our world-building chops to a new setting, upending many of the fantasy norms. You'll find few of the traditional tropes here – no medieval social structures, no gods, and no humans. The Snarl is built on an otherworldy foundation that is facing disruption and dire threats due to environmental unbalance.
Rules
The Snarl uses a skill-based 2d10 system that enables a wide variety of play styles, from exploration and dungeon crawls to social intrigues and free-form adventures. The game features robust social and downtime mechanics. The combat system melds theater-of-the-mind with tactical options and uses a unique Jolt system that ensures every attack has an impact.
Influences
The Snarl takes inspiration from many games. You'll find the elegance of Dungeon World, an action-economy similar to Pathfinder 2, and a setting similar in imagination to Eclipse Phase, The Wildsea or Spire.
Playtest & Kickstarter
The Snarl is currently undergoing an open playtest. We encourage people to download the setting and rules and check it out!
The Snarl will be released under an open license and will encourage third-party content.
