Draughts management is now embroiled in union action over the recent firing of a kitchen worker from one of its London-based board game bars. First reported by BoardGameWire, Awed Nur, a member of United Voices of the World (UVW), was unceremoniously dismissed on July 1 from his job at the Stratford Draughts location. According to a press release from the UVW, ownership claimed a “reduced need for staffing hours,” but other workers believe a recent strike notice may have moved the company to retaliate.

The union has submitted an application for interim relief and is seeking legal action on Nur’s behalf, claiming that he had a previously spotless employment record and was not served any warnings, consultation or other due process before summary dismissal. Without any material grounds to justify management’s decision, UVW is characterizing the action as “clear trade union victimization.”

"This case demonstrates the shameful lengths some employers will go to in order to intimidate and silence their workers."
