Avatar and Game Master's Companion, Ex Regnum Presents
Small publisher Ex Regnum breaks into the scene with official Avatar x DnD 5e crossover and more.
Ex Regnum is a small indie game company based in Valencia, Spain, born in 2019 of a lifelong passion for TTRPGs and general board games shared by two childhood friends. After releasing their own RPGs, Regnum Ex Nihilo, Más Allá de los Eones and Shinobi to local success the company incorporated new talent to bring up quality to professional standards and face a new challenge in 2026, the international RPG space. Working with beloved licenses and IPs as well as their own material, we're ready to fill your games with new content and possibilities. This is what we are offering you now, and I think the best way to start would be by explaining just what Game Master’s Companion seeks to be. It was a simple game of D&D back in college. We were playing Tomb of Annihilation, an adventure I still hold dear, and we ran into the issue of having to flick through the pages, pass the book around the table while having to cover parts of it with my hands to cover spoilers, as the players looked at the relevant information. Or in other instances we would eventually pay the DnD Beyond subscription so that everyone could check it on their phones. Which was still frustrating when we had to renew it, again and again, as the campaign went along.
This is where the idea for GMC came along. An easy way to handle and distribute information between players, especially newer ones, like a couple of my players were. Then we got the chance to work with the Avatar team over at Paramount, which was a great honor for me having grown up enjoying the show like so many, and GMC felt like a match made in heaven for all the newer players that this popular piece of media would surely bring. So here we are, a year and some change later, finally having released our first round of GMCs.But, onto ATLA. How do we bring the mastery over all four elements to the table? Well, we have developed a bending technique system, that is a bit simpler than spellcasting and a fair bit more complex than Battle Master’s maneuvers. You will be able to, when playing your bending character, pick techniques from the relevant element, achieving more advanced ones as you level up.
Starting with Air, the element of freedom, we wanted to emphasize the great mobility and peaceful nature of users of this element. This was actually something that worked quite well in the context of 5e, as the ability to quickly traverse the battlefield paired really well with directional pushes and pulls of both foes and enemies, and it made for a lightweight movement controller without peer.
Moving on to Earth, the element of substance, we made it as different as we could from Air. Heavy, weighty, we wanted to have them control the battlefield by wielding the battlefield itself, with a number of their techniques becoming stronger if you used them near terrain you’d used before, favoring a steady, slower style that made enemies come to you.
Fire, the element of power, was definitely the most straightforward of the bunch. Fire in 5e is already associated with a similar role as in the world of Avatar, aggression, destructiveness and area damage, though we made sure to give some slight utility as well, resembling motion from the show.
And lastly Water, the element of change. It was probably the trickiest element to convey, and we landed on a balanced approach able to transition from defense into offense, and building up an advantageous position with incremental advantage, chaining moves into one another, as ebbs and flows ramping into a crashing wave.
Of course, there will be things for those of you who do not want to play as a bender, and those of you who prefer to play as GM too, with brand new items, quests, and NPCs both as roleplay guides and statblocks, all in tidy cards. I wanna take some time to speak about our two other projects that will ship alongside the Avatar GMC. GMC: Rookie is a simple way to get started in Dungeons and Dragons, with simple, straightforward quests, NPCs and reference cards to start your own campaign and build from there in whichever direction you like. While it is simple, it is a sturdy, useful tool to learn how to make use of the GMC system. GMC: The Mists of Albion is our own setting, specifically a location within this setting that traces the Arthurian Legend and brings it into a new, high fantasy interpretation, mixing chivalric tales, and gaelic and celtic mythos to bring a fresh, unique experience born of a story everyone knows. We will be launching this September, so we hope to see you there!
