Two Starving Gnolls has launched Shadows over Port Royal, a system-agnostic investigative horror adventure set in Port Royal, Jamaica, in 1692.

Veteran RPG artist Earl Geier, known for his work on classic Call of Cthulhu titles including Masks of Nyarlathotep and Horror on the Orient Express, has created new black-and-white artwork for the book.

The adventure takes place during the final days of the infamous Caribbean city, shortly before the earthquake and tsunami of 7 June 1692. Players are free to explore Port Royal, follow different leads, interact with competing factions, and decide for themselves who to trust as the investigation unfolds.

The project originally began life as a board game, which Two Starving Gnolls presented at SPIEL in Essen before eventually putting it aside. Years later, the team returned to the setting and rebuilt the idea from the ground up as a tabletop role-playing adventure.

Shadows over Port Royal is also the third entry in a loose trilogy of Lovecraftian adventures from the publisher's previous Lovecraftian adventures: Pax Cthuliana, set in London in 1927, and Svalbard, set in the Norwegian Arctic in 1993.

The design takes inspiration from the investigative horror scenarios the creators grew up playing in the 1990s, while using a much more open structure. Depending on which clues players pursue, which factions they engage with, and the decisions they make, the adventure can develop in very different directions.

The adventure is system-agnostic and is expected to provide around five to seven sessions of play, depending on the group's choices and how deeply they explore Port Royal.

The Kickstarter funded within 90 minutes and runs until October 8, 2026.
