Zaria Davis has been named the interim executive director at GAMA: The Tabletop Game Association, a position left vacant ever since John Stacy, the previous executive director, stepped down in October. This follows an ongoing search conducted by the GAMA Board of Directors to fill the position of executive director permanently. On top of ensuring a smooth transition, part of Davis’ responsibilities are to review standard operating procedures, policies, and contracts, as well as sharing her knowledge and insights into the trade organization’s best practices.

What’s notable about Davis’ appointment is her expertise in restorative practice, organizational development and inclusive leadership, having worked with several nonprofit organizations and businesses through “periods of transformation and growth”, according to a GAMA press release. At the same time, she’s an ordained minister and boasts an extensive background in advocacy and consulting. This decision also seems to affirm GAMA’s vision to reinvigorate the tabletop industry association through its 10-year plan. “The board has brought Zaria Davis in as interim executive director to ensure we keep moving forward during this transitional stage,” said GAMA Board President Nicole Brady in a press release. "She will be helping the organization build on our existing procedures with a primary objective of ensuring a strong foundation for when we hire the new executive director.”

Members of the association’s DEI Committee, too, appear optimistic about Davis’ appointment, sharing with Rascal via email that they look forward to Davis’ guidance through this transition. “I was very pleased to see that they selected someone with her background. I know that she is here on an interim basis, but I am hoping she can build a solid foundation for the role moving forward and bring some more stability to general operations and internal management,” said Carrie Lindon, communications manager at Snowbright Studio and the current chair of the DEI Committee.

What’s notable about Davis’ appointment is her expertise in restorative practice, organizational development and inclusive leadership.

“Primarily, we hope that the new executive director will continue focusing on the work of the DEI Committee and Horizons Fellowship as a positive force for change in the industry. What that means in the immediate term is hopefully diversifying the GAMA staffers and appointing a specific hire that can help coordinate the DEI Committee's efforts,” said Ray Chou, co-founder of Mythworks and a member of the DEI Committee at GAMA.

To find out more about Davis’ appointment and experiences, Rascal has reached out to her via email. She shared more about what she hopes to accomplish with GAMA while the search for the next executive director takes place, as well as her plans to extend community and partner engagement around upcoming programs, such as the 2027 Origin Game Fair.

This interview has been edited slightly for clarity.

Khee Hoon Chan: What are your impressions of GAMA as an organization?

Zaria Davis: GAMA is a dynamic and deeply committed organization with a long-standing legacy of community impact. What stands out most to me is the passion of its members, as well as the way staff, board, and partners continue to show up for one another and for the communities we serve. GAMA’s mission lives in its people, in the collaborative spirit that drives every initiative, and in the vision that each member holds for a more inclusive, sustainable, and equitable future.

Chan: Can you share what you’ll be taking on and reviewing in this position?

Davis: As interim executive director, my role is to ensure both continuity and care during this time of transition. I’m maintaining alignment between our strategic goals and day-to-day practices, so the next executive director inherits a stable, thriving organization grounded in clarity, trust, and shared purpose.

Chan: What are some things you’re hoping to accomplish with GAMA during this period?

Davis: My focus is threefold: continuity of service so programs and partnerships continue without interruption; organizational stabilization through systems review, leadership development, and transparent communication; [and] preparation for the next chapter by strengthening the foundation for onboarding and supporting a new executive director.

We’re also working to expand community and partner engagement around upcoming milestones like the 2026 Expo and 2027 Origin Game Fair, both of which are opportunities to showcase GAMA’s innovation and impact.

"I’m maintaining alignment between our strategic goals and day-to-day practices, so the next executive director inherits a stable, thriving organization grounded in clarity, trust, and shared purpose."

Chan: Can you share a bit about your expertise in restorative practice, organizational development, and inclusive leadership, and how you’ll apply these experiences here?

Davis: My work is rooted in restorative practice, building relationships, fostering accountability, and nurturing environments where every voice matters. That lens shapes my approach to organizational development and leadership transitions. Within GAMA, I’m applying these principles to strengthen trust, clarify roles, and ensure that decision-making remains inclusive and transparent. I see this moment as both a bridge and an invitation to reaffirm GAMA’s values through every action and conversation.

Chan: What are some considerations GAMA is looking for in the incoming executive director?

Davis: GAMA’s next leader will embody collaboration, vision, and a deep commitment to equity. The organization seeks someone ready to honor its history while guiding it toward a bold, creative, and community-centered future. The board search committee, I am sure, will identify candidates who align with GAMA’s mission and vision and will lead GAMA’s journey of impact and innovation.

Chan: Do you have anything else you wish to share?

Davis: I’m honored to walk with GAMA in this season of transformation. Transitions are often full of both reflection and possibility, and what continues to inspire me is the collective hope and determination driving this work forward. Together with our members, partners, and supporters, we’re not just preparing for change; we’re shaping the future we want to see.
