Broken Kingdom, a ten-chapter campaign for The Fire Burns Low, starts with a job and ends with a crawl through the capital's sewers while a host of soldiers bears down on its gates. Drawing on The Three Musketeers, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and the War of the Roses, it introduces The Fire Burns Low in layers, from the moment the players are first marked to their final, desperate escape.

They'll be cornered in the dark, their vitality draining away as a thing in the mirrors stirs. An unspoken timer counts down until it lurches to life, and the job comes into sharp focus as a struggle to survive. The campaign takes players from the dark into the familiar and back into the strange, with whiplash to match, as they solve a murder, escape a castle, get embroiled in a conspiracy, plan a heist, prevent a coup, and more.

Players can change the course of events however they wish, nudging it here and there or overturning it entirely. Each chapter is modular and can be played in any order, though not without consequence, so groups can pick up the adventure in parts or as one sweeping narrative. Maps, diagrams, and GM cheat sheets come with every chapter.

The Fire Burns Low

Broken Kingdom is played with The Fire Burns Low, a dark folklore RPG fifteen years in the making. The stories are the kind told in the dead of night, over glowing embers: mysteries, horror, and ancient fables come to life. You play mortals who find safety behind town walls, but the outside always seeps in. The world beyond is strange, and as they say in the places on the fringe of the map, here be monsters. In The Fire Burns Low, the known part of the map is small and the world outside it is vast.

The rules run on six-sided dice and a few hard laws. Danger is always real: every Injury makes your rolls worse, and the sixth one kills you. Fights are desperate, and monsters may not even have flesh and blood to destroy. There are no levels. Characters grow through marks taken from oaths, curses, relics, and bargains. When escape is impossible, you can Choose Death and go out doing something worth remembering. The goal is satisfying endings, and play that leaves thrilling memories and stories that stay with you long after.

The Fire Burns Low is a passion project currently in pre-release. Two Worldbooks and nine adventures are either in pre-release or in the final stage of production for it. The goal is for players to contribute to the world as it continues to turn, and to bring it alive with their own stories.
