What is Lyrical Ludology?

Lyrical Ludology is a shortform interview podcast in which your host, Logan Timmins, interviews folks from all over the indie TTRPG scene to try and answer the question, "What is a lyric game?"

The best part is this - throughout Season 1, no two designers gave the same answer! Such is the possibility and expansiveness of the lyric game scene.

What are lyric games?

Well, that is what the podcast is about, but if you want a little taste you can read this Rascal article by Brandon O'Brien, this Dicebreaker article by Lin Codega, or this other Dicebreaker article by Justin Joyce.

In short though, to me lyric games are the 'experimental art' side of TTRPGs. They often take what we expect and twist and mold it into something bold and unexpected that will give you a personal and emotional experience.

What to expect from Season 2

We have 7 new guests from around the world sharing insights on lyric games that will expand and explode your mind. Some are household names, others may be new to you, but each of them hold a unique perspective on the power, purpose, and play of lyric games.

As with Season 1, Season 2 will comprise of 15-20 episodes of 10-20 minutes. Each episode will cover a key concept within the interviewee's view and experience of lyric game design. You can expect deep, designerly conversations brimming with insight and inspiration.

What people are saying about the podcast

Post from Travis D Hill, PhD: I'm finally catching up on the Lyrical Ludology podcast, and y'all's discussion is so so so so good. Thank you for this. Post from Michael: Season 1 of Lyrical Ludology was really insightful about a massively overlooked subgenre of TTRPGs. I'm so excited that a second season is on the cards! Post from Sticky Doodler: I wanted to thank the Lyrical Ludology podcast and host for giving voice to the lyric games movement and connecting those of us who love this quirky, expressive, playful (yet sometimes unplayable?) corner of the games community. You made this game possible!

Why crowdfunding?

Though host Logan Timmins did all the recording, editing, and admin alone for Season 1, this workflow is no longer sustainable. Instead, funds raised will go to paying experienced audio editor Imani. With Imani on board, Season 2 promises to be just as good as the first - but we need your help to make it real.
