RPG bundle crowdfunds disaster aid in the aftermath of Typhoon Sinlaku
Proceeds from 92 digital games will help locals from Saipan and the Mariana Islands with little power or clean water.
April 22, but the tempest left widespread, lasting devastation on the island of Saipan and the surrounding Mariana Islands. Guam’s public infrastructure, for instance, has suffered about $435 million in damages, while many businesses in Saipan remain closed, with little power or water available. In response, game designer Luke Simonds, who publishes under the moniker Cats Have No Lord, has put together the Typhoon Sinlaku TTRPG Relief Bundle on itch.io, featuring tabletop RPGs from 63 creators. All proceeds will be donated to the Micronesia Climate Change Alliance (MCCA), which supplies direct aid and volunteer labor.
As a designer based in Saipan, Simonds told Rascal in an email that he organized this bundle because he had seen, first-hand, the difficulty in rebuilding lives in the aftermath of a natural disaster — and the importance of relief efforts in making it possible. Typhoon Sinlaku marked the second major typhoon his home has suffered after Typhoon Yutu in 2018. A large part of the devastation can be attributed to the prevalence of less secure structures, mainly non-concrete and semi-concrete houses. Simonds shared he was privileged enough to avoid that fate, as he’s staying in an all-concrete house.
“We just had some flooding inside from a broken window, but many people lost their roof, lost their whole house, or had major flooding because they live in a low-lying area,” he said. “On top of that, people also lose access to drinking water [...] and food also quickly becomes an issue. There's some very intense short term needs like that, all of the basic needs of food, water, and shelter, that kind of get missed by the government and non-governmental organization responses that take days or weeks to mobilize. And it falls to local groups to cover those needs during that time.”

Simond also pointed out that Typhoon Sinlaku’s four-day battering of the region was particularly damaging, which means that supplies were dwindling even for people who had braced for days-long shelter against the typhoon. Currently, power has only been restored to 20 percent of Saipan, with significant resources devoted to clearing the debris from collapsed houses. Lack of funds and fuel, too, are threatening the operations of the Commonwealth Utility Corporation (CUC) in Saipan, and this is exacerbated by the reduced aid offered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) under the current Trump administration.
That’s why Simond saw the fundraiser as a crucial effort at this time for Saipan and the Mariana Islands, and wanted to work with MCCA, a non-profit organization that he saw offered aid immediately after it was safe to head out. Their team had been organizing door-to-door deliveries of drinking water and food for those who couldn’t leave their homes. “I volunteered [with] some of the deliveries, but I wanted to do more, and I'd been thinking about doing an itch.io charity bundle for a while anyway after having participated in some runs by other people,” he said. Putting the bundle together was “surprisingly easy” according to Simond, as itch.io already has a template and documentation in place for doing so. At the same time, he had some help from Jes Wade, who had organized several fundraisers, including the “No ICE in Minnesota” bundle in February.

Among some of the 92 games in the bundle are Agon by John Harper, built upon the Paragon system, and which lets you play as an epic hero forged from the depths of Greek mythology; and Temple of 1000 Swords by Brad Kerr, a tarot-inspired fantasy RPG about ploughing through a dungeon with bizarro swords, and a game Simond referred to as “absolutely bonkers with a d100 table of weird swords and screaming humanoid ducks. There’s also Perils & Princesses by Outrider Creative. Inspired by Grimm’s fairy tales, the RPG sees princesses embark on a conquest against dastardly goblins and fire-breathing dragons, empowered by the gifts of their Fairy Godmothers and aid from woodland creatures. “[Perils & Princesses is] one of my favorite games ever, combining Old School Renaissance (OSR) mechanics with really strong theming around princesses and fairytales,” said Simond. “[But] there's so much in [the bundle] though, that it feels bad to single out just a few when everything is so good.”
The Typhoon Sinlaku TTRPG Relief Bundle has raised $10,980 at time of writing, exceeding the initial goal of $5,000 with three days left until its conclusion. Simond shared that he is blown away by the reception to the bundle so far. “I do feel like this is one of the times that you can really say the ‘TTRPG community’ came together on something,” he said. “I don't like throwing that word around lightly, since it can very easily lead to misunderstandings about who you're in community with, but I feel it's really applicable here, the way so many people have been willing to help out on this.”
